Bhowmik was born on 2 October 1950. He made his international debut at the age of 20. Played his first match against Formosa in the Merdeka Cup on 30 July 1970. He played 24 international matches for India in which he scored 9 goals. He scored a hat-trick against the Philippines in the 1971 Merdeka Cup. In this match, India won 5-1. There is a lot of disappointment among the fans due to Bhowmick’s departure, who expressed their grief on social media.
Big success achieved at domestic level
In 1968, he started his professional career with the Rajasthan club. He scored seven goals in his first season in the Kolkata Football League. At the domestic level, Bhowmick took part in the Santosh Trophy five times for Bengal. Out of these, four times under his captaincy, he made the team champion and scored 24 goals. While playing for East Bengal, he scored 82 goals and won his team the title of Calcutta Football League three times, while he also won the title of IFA Shield for his club three times.

Achieved success as coach
Bhowmik also achieved success as a coach. In 2003, while being his coach, East Bengal won the title of LG Asian Club Cup to be held in Jakarta. He led East Bengal to the National Football League title held in Kathmandu between 2002-2004, and the club won the IFA Shield Cup in 2002 under his coach. In the same year, the team also won the Dunrad Cup. He also worked as a technical director. Bhowmick was part of the team when I-League club Churchill Brothers won the title in the year 2012-2013. He also helped Mohun Bagan win the Sikkim Gold Cup in the year 1992. In the year 2017, he was awarded the East Bengal Lifetime Achievement Award.
