According to reports, the Deputy Commissioner of Mumbai Police (Traffic), Raj Tilak Roshan has informed about the extension of the date of rear seat belt rule. He said that the campaign to implement the rear seat belt rule has been postponed for 10 days. This has been done to make the commuters of Mumbai aware of the new rules and preparations to implement it through social media and radio.

200 will be fined

This will give the commuters of Mumbai ample time to become aware of the security operation that will start from November 10. After the implementation of this rule, passengers who do not wear rear seat belt will be sent an e-challan with a fine of Rs 200. Apart from this, a similar campaign will also be started to crack down on two wheelers carrying passengers without helmets.

Penalty for not wearing seatbelt-helmet

According to section 194 (B) (1) of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, any person driving without a safety belt or carrying passengers without wearing a seatbelt or helmet can be punished. Like the rear seat belt rule, the rear passengers are also required to wear a helmet. However, most people do not do this. It is not strictly enforced even by the traffic police.

Delhi Police implemented the rule

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made it mandatory for rear passengers to wear seat belts. This rule was immediately implemented in Delhi. The Delhi Traffic Police also started challaning those who violated the seat belt rules. On the first day of the operation on September 14, Delhi Police issued 17 court challans near Connaught Place on Barakhamba Road. The penalty amount for each challan is Rs 1,000.
