Railways canceled more than 35 thousand trains in the first 9 months of the current financial year, RTI revealed

More than 41 thousand trains were delayed

The Railways suspended all its normal passenger services for most of 2020 due to the COVID pandemic and ran only special trains during the year. In response to the RTI, the Railways has said that 15,199 mail or express trains were delayed from April to December 2021, while 26,284 passenger trains were delayed during the same period. The total number of such delayed trains has gone up to 41,483.

According to the Ministry of Railways, Railways is on track to deliver 58 supercritical and 68 critical projects worth over Rs 1,15,000 crore in the next few years. Of the 29 supercritical projects, 27 were to be completed by December 2021, while two projects would be handed over by March this year.

However, it is not clear how many passengers were affected between April and December last year, when around 35,026 trains were canceled due to maintenance works. It has also been revealed from RTI that during this time more than 40 thousand trains have been delayed.

Punctuality performance decreased

The RTI also reveals that the punctuality performance of the railways has reduced as trains resumed and normal operations resumed. During the April to June quarter, when the Railways was running only special trains, 7,050 trains were canceled and the punctuality performance was around 94 per cent. In the July-September quarter, this performance fell by 92 per cent as 14,249 trains were delayed.

Passengers have taken to social networking sites to complain about delays and many have even offered to reimburse passengers for lost time.
