Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently said that the central government has already cut the excise duty levied on the purchase of oil. He said that now the states should reduce the VAT charged on the purchase of petrol and diesel. It is clear from this statement of the Union Minister that unless the state governments reduce VAT on oil, the general public will not get any relief from expensive petrol and diesel.
