The Board of Control for Cricket in India has taken the first major action after the poor condition of Team India in two consecutive T20 World Cups. Senior Selection Committee has been dismissed. The BCCI announced to invite applications for the new selection committee on Friday, 18 November. Along with this, the board has packed the entire selection committee including chief selector Chetan Sharma without making a formal announcement. Not only this, the board has given the most important task in front of the new selection committee – the appointment of a separate captain in each format. That means Rohit Sharma’s leave from at least some T20 format is fixed.
The current selection committee made changes in the captaincy after Team India’s exit from the group stage in last year’s T20 World Cup. Virat Kohli had announced to give up the T20 captaincy before that, but then after the World Cup, Chetan Sharma’s committee took away the captaincy of the ODI team from Kohli, while in January, Kohli himself gave up the Test captaincy. After this Rohit Sharma was appointed captain in all three formats.
Different captain’s order in each format
However, this change was also of no use and under the captaincy of Rohit, Team India failed to win the title first in the T20 Asia Cup and then in the T20 World Cup. Apparently, there has been a demand for a change in the captaincy. Now its path seems to be getting clear in the coming days and it is certain that in the coming days the Indian team will see a divided captaincy.
BCCI has also mentioned the responsibility of the selectors in the application called for the selectors and for the first time the board has clearly written that the new selection committee will have to appoint a captain in every format.
Hardik will become T20 captain
At present, the captain of all the three teams is Rohit Sharma, but it was believed that he would be captained at least in the T20 format. Especially considering Hardik Pandya’s title success as captain in IPL 2022 and his importance in the team, he is being considered as the captaincy contender. He is currently captaining the team in the T20 series on New Zealand tour and if everything goes as expected, he will be made full-time captain in T20 captaincy in the coming times. At the same time, Rohit Sharma will remain the captain of Test and ODI for the next few times.
