Road, Transport and Highways Minister (MoRTH) – Nitin Gadkari often talks on new ideas for the growth of the Indian auto market. He is also known for taking some important decisions for this sector, whether it is 100 percent electrification, switching to alternative fuels like CNG or ethanol or regularizing emission standards, Nitin Gadkari has been quite vocal on these matters. And have also taken steps towards fulfilling their targets.

Now the next step of the Union Minister is to make vehicles even more safe in India and hence after implementing the mandatory fitment of two airbags for all four wheelers, Nitin Gadkari is now planning to make 6 airbags mandatory in all cars. It is now being argued that India is a price sensitive market where even a slight change in cost affects the sales of the entry-level model.

Customers will have to spend extra so much money

Reports say that adding four more airbags for the rear seat passengers will cost between Rs 8,000 and Rs 9,000 in addition to the extra cost. An airbag usually costs around Rs 1,800 and changes in the structure will cost Rs 500. Then, the cost of increasing the equipment and labor cost will also be extra. As per industry estimates, the introduction of 6 airbags in the entry-level model will increase their cost by around Rs 30,000 covering all costs.

In August last year, Nitin Gadkari took to Twitter to share his views on making 6 airbags mandatory in cars and said that in the interest of safety of passengers, he has asked all private vehicle manufacturers to have a minimum of 6 airbags in all variants. It was appealed to make available airbags compulsorily. The move also supports Global NCAP’s ‘Safer Cars for India’ campaign and promotes a secure motoring culture in India. In fact, side airbags are not available as a mandatory fitment in many developed markets but they play an essential role in meeting crash tests and safety measures.
