Karishma Kapoor, one of the leading actresses of the 90s, is currently serving as a judge on the popular show ‘India’s Best Dancer-4,’ alongside Geeta Kapoor and Terence Lewis. Recently, the trio made an appearance on Zakir Khan’s comedy show ‘Aapka Apna Zakir,’ where they shared not only laughs but also insights into their professional and personal lives. During the show, Zakir Khan asked Karishma whether there was a ban on women from the Kapoor family working in films and if she was permitted to pursue a career in acting. Let’s dive into Karishma’s enlightening responses.
Was There a Ban on Women in the Kapoor Family?
When asked about the restrictions on women in the Kapoor family regarding their careers, Karishma broke the myth. She explained that the idea of needing permission for acting was unfounded. “When my mother got married, and Neetu Auntie did too, it was their personal choice to focus on their families and raise children, though they were both successful in their careers even post-marriage,” she said.
Dispelling the Myths
Karishma further clarified, “At that time, other women like Shammi uncle’s and Shashi uncle’s wives, Geeta Ji and Jennifer Auntie, continued to work even after marriage. So, there was no such ban in the Kapoor family that women couldn’t work in films after marriage.” Her comments highlight the fact that decisions regarding careers were based on personal choices rather than familial restrictions.
Freedom to Choose Careers
Karishma expressed her own passion for acting, stating, “I have always had a keen interest in acting, which led me to pursue it as a career. Similarly, both Kareena and Ranbir Kapoor entered the film industry, but Ridhima chose not to follow that path as she did not have a strong interest in acting. In our family, there has never been a restriction on choosing one’s career.” This reflects a more supportive environment within the Kapoor family, allowing individuals to explore their interests freely.
Karishma’s Film Career
Karishma made her acting debut in 1991 with the film ‘Prem Qaidi’ and quickly rose to fame with notable films like ‘Anari,’ ‘Deewana,’ ‘Kuli No. 1,’ ‘Hero No. 1,’ ‘Raja Hindustani,’ and ‘Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge.’ Throughout her career, she has starred in numerous blockbuster films and received critical acclaim for her performances. Recently, she was seen in ‘Murder Mubarak.’ Currently, she has taken the place of Sonali Bendre as a judge in the latest season of ‘India’s Best Dancer.’
Closure of Zakir Khan’s Show
Interestingly, the very show where Karishma shared her insights, ‘Aapka Apna Zakir,’ is set to be discontinued. Following its launch, the show faced significant public backlash and low ratings, leading to its cancellation just a month into airing. The network decided to end the show due to its underwhelming TRP ratings.
