Om Prakash Bhandari was born on 9 March 1917 in a small village named Jalalabad in Amritsar district of Punjab. Born in a Punjabi family, Om Prakash started writing poetry in Urdu at the age of seven. However, he did not get any encouragement from this house to write poetry. But when he met a poet named Amar Chand Amar, and recognizing the immense talent and potential of little Om Prakash, he encouraged him to write.

It was the poet Amar Chand Amar who gave Om Prakash Bhandari the nickname ‘Waar’ which means moon. Jalalabadi was imposed to keep Qamar coming from Jalalabad i.e. his village and Om Prakash Bhandari became Qamar Jalalabadi. In those days it was quite common to name writers and most of the poets after the village where they lived. After completing his matriculation from Amritsar, he started his journalism career by writing for Lahore based newspapers like Dainik Milap, Dainik Pratap, Nirala, Star Sahakar.

Qamar Jalalabadi was the lyricist of many famous songs

Although attracted to the film industry while pursuing journalism, Qamar Jalalabadi came to Pune in the early 1940s. In 1942, he wrote songs for his first film, Zamindar. Many of his songs like ‘Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu’, ‘Dum Dum Diga Diga’, ‘Ik Dil Ke Tukde Huey Hazar’ became very famous. He worked for almost 40 years in the entertainment industry. In his career spanning forty years, he not only wrote poetry or songs, but Qamar Jalalabadi has also written more than 150 stories, screen plays of films and his dialogues.
