CWG 2022: Satwik-Chirag pair became champion, India’s golden hat-trick in badminton
Satwik Sairaj and Chirag Shetty won the gold medal by defeating the hosts England pair.
Shetty’s pairing of Satwik and Chirag rocked the CWG
India completed a golden hat-trick in badminton on the last day of the Commonwealth Games. PV Sindhu in women’s singles and Lakshya Sen in men’s singles followed by the pair of Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won the gold medal in men’s doubles. India’s number one pair defeated England’s Lane and Wendy’s pair. This is India’s gold medal in men’s doubles. Earlier this pair had won silver medals in the year 2018.
Gold won in 45 minutes
The pair of Satwik and Chirag won the match which lasted for 45 minutes by 21-15, 21-13. This is the first time in the history of Commonwealth Games that India has won three gold medals in badminton. Satwik and Chirag had performed brilliantly throughout the game and were being considered as strong contenders. The pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwik had earlier clashed with the English pair twice. Both the teams had won 1-1 times. In the year 2019, the England pair won the Denmark Open, while Satwik-Chirag won the match in the Tokyo Olympics.
India won medal in straight games
In the first game, the Indian pair got their grip on the net, so that they did not have to work very hard to win. However, the host pair made a comeback in the second game. The match turned very exciting. Wendy’s drop shots especially troubled the Indian pair. However, he could not get ahead of the satvik-chirag. By the break, India had achieved a lead of 16-11, due to which they did not have to work very hard to win the match.
