Country’s ‘Steel Man’ Jamshed J Irani passed away, breathed his last at the age of 85
Tata Steel informed about the death of Irani. Irani has been associated with Tata Steel for more than four decades. He retired from the board of Tata Steel in June 2011, leaving behind a legacy of 43 years. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2007 for his contribution to the industry.

After studying abroad and starting a professional career, Irani returned to India in 1968 to join the Tata Iron and Steel Company (now Tata Steel). He joined the company as an assistant to the director in charge of research and development.
Worked in many Tata companies
Apart from Tata Steel and Tata Sons, Dr. Irani also served as a director of several Tata group companies including Tata Motors and Tata Teleservices. Irani is survived by his wife Daisy Irani and their three children Zubin, Nilofar and Tanaaz.
Jamshedji Irani started his career with the British Iron and Steel Research Association in Sheffield in 1963, but he always had a desire to contribute to the progress of the country. He returned to India in 1968 to join the Tata Iron and Steel Company (now Tata Steel) and joined Tata as an assistant to the director in charge of research and development.
Retired from Tata Steel in 2001
Irani became General Superintendent of Tata Steel in 1978, General Manager in 1979 and President of Tata Steel in 1985. In 1988 he took over as the Joint Managing Director and in 1992 he was made the Managing Director. Irani retired from the company in 2001.
Jamshed J Irani joined the board of Tata Steel in 1981 and was a non-executive director for a decade from 2001. Apart from Tata Steel and Tata Sons, Irani also served as a director of several Tata group companies, including Tata Motors and Tata Teleservices. He also held the post of National President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in 1992-93. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2007 for his contribution to the industry.
