Case filed against Meta regarding Facebook’s facial recognition technology, know details

US state Texas (Texas) introduced its own facial recognition technology i.e. Face Recognition Technology (Face Recognition Technology) of use and financial loss (Financial Loss) to demand meta (Meta) has been sued. Texas Attorney General Paxton (Attorney General Paxton) in contravention of state law Facebook (now known as META) on the biometric data of millions of Texas (Biometric Data) for capturing and using users’ data without informing them, without obtaining permission.
Paxton said in a statement late Monday, Facebook will no longer take advantage of people and their children to make profits at the cost of someone’s safety and well-being. This is another example of Big Tech’s deceitful business practice and it must stop. I will continue to fight for Texas privacy and safety.
Facebook is collecting users’ biometric data
Facebook is collecting millions of biometric identifiers (defined as records of retina or iris scans, fingerprints, voiceprints, or hand or facial geometry) uploaded by friends and family using the social media app. Available in photo and video. Through this illegal activity, Facebook exploited the personal information of users and non-users alike to further develop their work and get the most out of it.
The lawsuit states that the company repeatedly captured biometric identifiers billions of times without permission in order to know it was in violation of Texas’s Capture or Use of Biometric Identifiers Act and the Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
Meta shuts down automatic tagging system
Texas is one of the few states in the US, along with Illinois and Washington, to have biometric privacy laws. In early 2021, a justice in Illinois approved a $650 million class action settlement over the Facebook tagging system. Meta discontinued the automatic tagging system in Illinois in November.
