The Indian cricket board (BCCI) is set to witness significant changes as its Secretary, Jay Shah, is rumored to be stepping down to take on a prominent role in world cricket. With the tenure of the current International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman, Greg Barclay, coming to an end, Shah’s ascent to this prestigious position appears almost certain. As a farewell gesture, Shah has announced a landmark decision aimed at increasing financial rewards for domestic cricketers, a move that will benefit female cricketers and junior as well as senior male cricketers alike.
Enhanced Awards for Domestic Players
On August 26, Jay Shah took to social media platform ‘X’ to unveil the BCCI’s new initiative. He revealed that, moving forward, prize money will be awarded alongside the Player of the Match and Player of the Tournament awards in all women’s and junior cricket tournaments conducted under the domestic cricket program. Furthermore, similar prize money will apply for the Player of the Match in the pivotal senior men’s tournaments such as the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament. It’s worth noting that the Ranji Trophy has already been awarding prize money to its participants.
Financial Boost for Domestic Players
Shah’s announcement is expected to bring about a noticeable enhancement in the earnings of domestic cricketers, motivating them to strive for improved performances. His justification for this decision highlights the BCCI’s commitment to recognizing and rewarding excellent performances in domestic cricket. Shah also expressed gratitude towards the BCCI’s Apex Council for facilitating this landmark decision and reaffirmed the board’s ongoing efforts to create a nurturing environment for cricketers across the nation.

BCCI’s Commitment to Players’ Financial Growth
In recent years, the BCCI has made substantial strides in enhancing the financial well-being of its players, both male and female. Earlier this year, the board announced an increase in match fees for players involved in Tests to promote the format. Notably, two years ago, the board took commendable steps to equalize the match fees of female players in all formats with their male counterparts. This push for equality was coupled with a significant increase in match fees for players participating in the Ranji Trophy, making it almost double the previous amount.
Future Prospects
This initiative not only reflects the BCCI’s dedication to fostering talent but also aims to attract more athletes into the domestic circuit, enriching the overall quality and competitiveness of Indian cricket. By prioritizing financial incentives, the BCCI hopes to invest in the future of cricket in India, ensuring that cricketers feel valued and recognized for their contributions to the sport.
Conclusion
As Jay Shah prepares to transition into a global cricket leadership role, his legacy at the BCCI will undoubtedly include the financial empowerment of domestic players. This strategic move emphasizes the board’s long-term vision of cultivating a robust cricket culture that rewards dedication and excellence. With these changes set in motion, the landscape of domestic cricket in India is poised for a transformative era.
