Maharashtra’s government is taking decisive action in response to a disturbing incident involving two young girls at a school in Badlapur. The government, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has suspended three police officers, including a senior police inspector, following accusations that they failed to properly address the allegations of misconduct against the children. The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, leading to large-scale protests in Badlapur.
Government Action and Public Response
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the suspensions on social media, stating, “Orders have been issued for the immediate suspension of a senior police inspector, an assistant sub-inspector, and a head constable for their failure to perform their duties.” This prompt action reflects the serious nature of the allegations and the government’s commitment to accountability in law enforcement.
Investigation Launch: SIT Formation
In light of the severe nature of the allegations, the Maharashtra government has already formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. Earlier this week, Fadnavis instructed the Thane police commissioner to draft a proposal to expedite the case through a fast-track court.
The incident of misconduct in Badlapur is extremely serious; I condemn it in the strongest terms. A SIT headed by a women officer of IG rank has been constituted for the investigation. The government aims to take this matter to a fast-track court so that the victim’s family can receive justice as soon as possible.

Opposition’s Reaction
The opposition parties in Maharashtra have fiercely criticized the state government over the incident. They allege that the family of the victims was forced to wait for 11 hours outside the Badlapur police station to file their complaint. Uddhav Thackeray, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), lambasted the government, stating, “Such incidents should not occur anywhere in the country. We were about to pass the power bill, but our government was toppled. Those who brought down our government and are now in power must pass the power bill and take strict action.”
Thackeray further alleged, “I have heard that the school where this incident occurred is associated with members of the BJP. However, I do not wish to politicize the issue; hence, strict action must be taken against all those culpable, whether they are BJP workers or otherwise.”
Looking Ahead
The situation in Badlapur remains tense, with ongoing protests and public outcry highlighting the demand for justice for the victims. The formation of the SIT and the suspensions of the police officials are steps toward addressing the grievances of the local community. As the investigation progresses, it will be crucial for the government to ensure transparency and accountability to restore trust among the citizens.
