Players started reaching Melbourne to take part in this Grand Slam starting from 17 January. World number one and 20 Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic also reached Melbourne on Wednesday but was not allowed to leave the airport.

Djokovic is the current champion of the Australian Open. He was given a special medical exemption to participate in this tournament. However, due to the high focus on getting this exemption, it seems that Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic did not pay much attention to his visa, for which he has to bear the brunt. Melbourne’s ‘The Age’ newspaper reported that Djokovic arrived at Tullamarine airport before midnight local time on Wednesday. But due to the mistake in their application for visa, their entry is getting delayed.

Djokovic gets medical exemption

Local media reported two hours later that he had still not crossed the border. There is also a mixed reaction on the medical exemption given to him, in which controversy has arisen on what basis the nine-time Australian Open champion has been given medical exemption. Along with this, the period of uncertainty about his playing due to the stringent corona vaccination protocol in the tournament also ended.

Posted on Instagram on Tuesday that he has got permission to go to Australia as an exception. Djokovic has consistently refused to state whether he has been vaccinated against the coronavirus, although it is necessary to go to Melbourne. The Victoria State Government has allowed entry to the Australian Open only to those players, staff and fans who have received both doses of the Corona vaccine.

ABF issued statement

The Australian Border Force said on Thursday, ‘Djokovic has not been able to present the necessary documents to gain entry into Australia, due to which his visa has been revoked. Those people who arrived in Australia who are not citizens here and their visa is canceled, then they will be sent back to their country. Djokovic’s lawyers are appealing in this court. For the time being, Djokovic has been kept in a hotel in Melbourne.
