Addressing the Intel India Safety Pioneers Conference 2022, Gadkari said that every year around 1.5 lakh people die in five lakh road accidents in the country. The minister said, we have decided to make it mandatory to provide at least six airbags in motor vehicles. We want to save people’s lives. He said, for this we need cooperation from all sides including the auto industry.

Intel organized this conference in the national capital to bring together industry, academia, and leading government organizations in its mission to enhance road safety in India. The initiative aims to strengthen road safety through collaboration and innovation.

Notification has been issued in January 2022 itself.

A notification was issued by the government on 14 January 2022 regarding the six essential airbags for eight seater vehicles. According to this notification, six airbags are required for M1 category vehicles from October 1, 2022. In order to keep the passengers safe by reducing the impact of head-on collisions and side-to-side collisions of vehicles, it has been decided that four other airbags should also be provided in the vehicles. Gadkari said, providing two side airbags and two tube airbags on the rear seat will make the journey safer for all the passengers.

47984 people died in road accidents in 2020

According to government data, in the year 2020, a total of 1.16 lakh road accidents occurred on national highways in which 47,984 people died. Gadkari had said last year that even small cars, which are mainly preferred by the lower middle class, should have proper airbags to save the lives of the people sitting in them in case of an accident. He had said that only in big cars with high prices, car manufacturers provide eight airbags.
