The picture was actually taken during an encounter between Indian militants and fighters at Shopian in Jammu and Kashmir. Bashir went from Anantnag to Shopian to take a picture of this long-running encounter. Bashir said that by around 1:30 pm, the encounter was still going on. There was a gunshot. On the roads leading to the encounter area, the jawans were sittings holding a blockade.
According to Bashir, the image of the Indian soldier who went viral on social media was not at the encounter site, he was blockading the streets with the jawans. There was some opposition to the Kashmir encounter from the locals, and it was the jawan’s job to keep the Kashmiris away from the encountered ground.
Bashir said that when the photo was taken, a Jawan from the Special Operations Group sat in the middle of the street on a chair. The soldier had an automatic gun in his hand, showing that he was trying to keep the protesters away from the encounter site.
